Individual predisposing factors include; age, conformation, previous injuries, temperament, training program and diet. Specifically for racing Greyhounds; track shape, racing surface, care and maintenance of the track, speed and conduct of the hare, number of dogs in the race, race time and length of kenneling are influencing factors for musculoskeletal injury. Thermographic Imaging of the Superficial Temperature in Racing Greyhounds before and after the Race

A total of 47 racing greyhounds were enrolled in this study on two race days (in July and September, resp.) at a racetrack. Twelve of the dogs participated in the study on both days. Thermographic images were taken before and after each race. From the images, superficial temperature points of selected sites (tendo calcaneus, musculus gastrocnemius, musculus gracilis, and musculus biceps femoris...

Influence of the Environment on Body Temperature of Racing Greyhounds

Heat strain is a potential risk factor for racing greyhounds in hot climates. However, there have been limited studies into the incidence of heat strain (when excess heat causes physiological or pathological effects) in racing greyhounds. The aim of this study was to determine if heat strain occurs in racing greyhounds, and, if so, whether environmental factors (e.g., ambient temperature and re...

Brief Communication Effects of Time of Collect ion and Sample Processing on von Wil lebrand Factor Concentrat ion in Retired Racing Greyhounds

Background: Concentrations of von Willebrand factor (vWF) are less than 30% in approximately 10% of Greyhounds. Hypothesis: That sample collection, processing, and storage can affect the concentration of vWF in plasma of Greyhounds. Animals: Nineteen healthy former racing Greyhounds. Methods: Prospective study: Blood samples were obtained from the jugular vein of dogs at 4 times during the day....

Effect of beta-adrenergic receptor blockade on racing performance of greyhounds with normal and with denervated hearts.

A field study was made of the effect of /3-adrenergic receptor blockade (propranolol; K6 592) on the racing performance of six normal greyhounds and three with chronic extrinsic cardiac denervation. Records were made of the time to race a 5/16-mile course before and after blockade; the heart rate was recorded by telemetry. After the administration of the /3-adrenergic receptor-blocking agent to...
